Children and parents

This is something that i noticed from the clinic session in KL today on psychiatric disorder. Parents sometime do not seems to know how to handle their child when they throw the tantrums, more so if they are so-called "mentally challenged" children. They can be so hard to handle that even the pediatric doctors can surrender themselves.

Oftenly, most parents will acknowledge the behaviour of the child even when it's something naughty and bad. This sometime can serve as a reinforcement to the child. As children know that they are getting their parent's attention by repeating the same bad behaviours and applying the same tricks on their parents, they will probably get more excited and do it more often. thus, sometime the best way is just to ignore the child.
However, sometime i believe that earlier education should be carried out in telling the right and the wrong to the children. Reasoning is probably the best way of them learning on how to survive in this world. This is more so happening in the Asian countries whereby they are still using their teaching way of using "Cane". I cant doubt the effectiveness in handling the children. BUT, IS THIS THE BEST WAY? Instead of telling everything only with "NO",please do explain to the child why they can't simply perform something so that they actually understand what they are doing. Well, the truth is, it's not applicable to those who are mentally retarded as they sometime do not understand reasons.

Depression

when we talked about depression, it seems that a lot of people will admit that they have depression. So, it's important that those who are in the medical professions would be able to recognize all the signs and symptoms of depression in order to manage the case appropriately and not to misdiagnose the case.

Those who are having depression maybe having social isolation, depressed mood and etc. And, they are more prone to tendency of performing self-harm/mutilation or attempting suicide. Thus, they should be watched out properly by their friends and family members.

Schizophrenia

Today we had a discussion on schizophrenia, a psychiatric disease which occupy a large population of the world today..

Schizo-"splitting", thus a mismonomer of splitting of mind came about on schizophrenia. It's actually a disease with unknown causes(genetic, biochemical changes in brain etc) whereby it affect the three main functions of the brain= thinking, emotion and behaviour. Thus, schizophrenic patient can sometime cause a lot of chaos in daily life without they themselves knowing it. They manifested mainly via positive and negative symptoms Those positive symptoms will include various way of *delusions and hallucination. Whereas in negative symptoms, they will usually have *blunted affect, avolition, alogia, anhedonia and asociality.

However, the disease itself is manageable by medications which include all the antipsychotics(typical-haloperidol/chlorpromazine or atypical-clozapine/risperidone). And, most importantly they can get back to their normal daily functions with compliance to their medications.

* Delusions- belief firmly held in spite of evidence of the contrary and not in keeping with the person's education, social and cultural background.

Hallucinations- perception of something without any external stimulus.

Avolition-
lack of drive and motive

Alogia- reduced content in speech

Affect- blunted(no change in facial expression)

Social life

In the routine day to day life, we often create conflicts with others as most people have their own opinion on how each thing should be done. However, we need to consciously remind ourself that it's not important to criticize what others is doing. Instead, remind them politely if they are wrong and encourage or praise them whenever they do something right

Belows are few things that we shouldn't or should be doing :
Will add on as time goes by....

1) Remind/ advice a person politely if he/she did something wrong(best if without a third party/person)

2) Provide appropriate response (feedback, agreement etc.) to the talking person as people tend to talk to get response (even if it's just a small smile)

3) Always observe others behaviour and Facial response (grimace, angry inside etc..)
It can help you a lot in day to day life.

4) Plan your arguments wisely(and i mean it) before you argue with your boss. Do not trigger any "War" unnecessarily!! you will not know when he is of bad mood and get back on you...

Saturday

Weekend is probably the day most people enjoyed most as they do not need to work or study during the weekend. Definitely, it also a time for everyone to actually relax themselves and also spending time with their family.

i have not much things to do this saturday and sunday except to actually organize up my thoughts and also study about psychiatry. It's not an easy job as i was thinking about before i myself is currently in psychiatric posting whereby there are a lot of stuffs to read on each psychiatric disorder.

Basically, i am too lazy to read about those thick book. i Have no other alternative rather than to actually just read the psychiatric book written by First Aids and Kaplan Handbook(also quite thick even it's a handbook).

Electronic Faulty

sometime electronic devises can really give a lot of havocs than give us all the headache. My laptop which is newly bought not long ago started having problems since not long ago as the internal fans were no longer working due to some unknown reasons. And, it get really hot when on for some time which it can be felt even on my laptop keyboard as i was typing.

Anyway, someone reminded me that i still have a mobile fan which i can position it so that it can face my laptop air flow compartment so that all the hot air can be so called channeled out and wouldn't burn off. Luckily that i noticed it early, or all my data would have been out of order at this moment.

Besides my laptop, my Discman was also giving out problem as the adapter no longer working. The adapter was old and in a bad condition whereby i don't think i will be able to fix it anymore. So, i need to go around the town to search for the suitable adapter which can fit mt Discman and it costs me around RM40...No choice other than to pay off the amount in order for me to listen to radio again as i used to listen to the radio through the Discman...

So, in conclusion, try to get those good quality electronic devices whenever anyone wants to get one. Be sure to check and research on the product that you will be buying or you will regret it sooner or later.
